SUBSIDIES
AND ALLOWANCES PAID BY GOVERNMENT IN DIR , SWAT AND BAJOUR
A total of Rs.56,010 is paid
annual as subsidies by the Government of India to the Chiefs and tribes of Dir
, Swat and Bajour . [ Of this , Rs.15,000 is paid to the Nawab of Dir , Rs.10,000 to the Khan of
Nawagai , Rs.8,000 to the Dir tribes , and the remainder to various Khans and
Maliks . ]
Prior to our connection with this
country in 1895 , tolls on trade passing
through Swat and Dir were levied by the Khans and tribes through whose limits
the trade passed . In order to exempt the trade through Dir and Swat from
extortions which threatened to prevent its expansion , certain annual
allowances were sanctioned by Government to compensate those who enjoyed an
income from such tolls , and the levying of them for the future was put a stop
to . [ The total paid as compensation in lieu of tolls is Rs.20,000 annually ,
of which Rs.10,000 is paid to the Nawab of Dir . ]
