SUBSIDIES AND ALLOWANCES PAID BY GOVERNMENT IN DIR , SWAT AND BAJOUR
A total of Rs.56,010 is paid annual as subsidies by the Government of India to the Chiefs and tribes of Dir , Swat and Bajour . [ Of this , Rs.15,000 is paid to the  Nawab of Dir , Rs.10,000 to the Khan of Nawagai , Rs.8,000 to the Dir tribes , and the remainder to various Khans and Maliks . ]
Prior to our connection with this country  in 1895 , tolls on trade passing through Swat and Dir were levied by the Khans and tribes through whose limits the trade passed . In order to exempt the trade through Dir and Swat from extortions which threatened to prevent its expansion , certain annual allowances were sanctioned by Government to compensate those who enjoyed an income from such tolls , and the levying of them for the future was put a stop to . [ The total paid as compensation in lieu of tolls is Rs.20,000 annually , of which Rs.10,000 is paid to the Nawab of Dir . ]
